UNC basketball falling out of race for a top player in 2025 recruiting class

The UNC basketball program has some ground to make up in the race for a five-star guard.

Hubert Davis and the North Carolina Tar Heels basketball program have established their 2025 recruiting big board, adding players as the months of have gone on. But it appears as if they are falling out of the race for a top player.

Five-star combo guard Darryn Peterson is a big UNC target who is seeing his recruitment take shape. The Huntington Prep product has taken some visits already and has more planned, signaling that maybe his recruitment is heading to the finish line.

And as it stands now, it appears as if the Tar Heels are falling behind.

Rivals.com reporter Rob Cassidy ranked the contenders for Peterson in his recruitment and North Carolina was listed at No. 5:

There feels like a growing gap between North Carolina and the four programs listed in front of it here, as buzz linking the Tar Heels and Peterson has become muffled in recent weeks, and talk about a possible fall visit seems to have faded.

Hubert Davis’ program could shoot up the pecking order at warp speed should that interest reignite and Peterson end up on North Carolina’s campus for a visit, however.

The Kansas Jayhawks are the favorites to land Peterson in Cassidy’s rankings with Ohio State right behind them. One thing that Kansas may have an advantage in is that Peterson did sign an NIL deal with adidas, who is the sponsor for the Jayhawks.
