UNC basketball could be looking to add one more player to 2024-25 roster

Is Hubert Davis and the UNC basketball program working to add an international player to the roster?

The North Carolina Tar Heels may not be done adding to their 2024-25 basketball roster. Even though it’s late in the Summer, Hubert Davis and his program could still make an addition and judging by a prospects’ recent comments, they are out to land another player.

With the 2024 NBA Academy Games taking place over the weekend, one prospect who participated revealed that the Tar Heels are showing interest in him. Julius Halaifonua, a 7-foot prospect out of New Zealand, revealed to Pro Insight that North Carolina has reached out to him. But they aren’t the only ones.

“Some of the bigger schools that have reached out…North Carolina, Kentucky, Gonzaga, and Georgetown,” the 18-year-old Halaifonua said. “I think those four right now are the biggest recruiters. But I’ve got a lot of others. I think I’m gonna have to make a big decision and do a lot of research in the next couple of weeks.”

Will this work into UNC’s favor?

It’s interesting to hear that North Carolina has reached out to him seeing that they potentially are still looking for a center prospect for either this year or next season.

The Tar Heels really haven’t explored the international route under Hubert Davis so it is surprising from that aspect as well.  A reclass could be possible for Halaifonua and that might work out in UNC’s favor.
