The premier AAU event of the Summer began on Monday as coaches, players, analysts and fans descended on North Augusta, South Carolina for the annual Peach Jam.
North Carolina will be represented at the event in more than one way and it didn’t take long for a recruit to earn some praise. Five-star forward Drake Powell has quickly climbed the recruiting rankings since committing to North Carolina in 2022, earning that fifth star and moving into the top 10 on 247Sports.
And now Powell is continuing that hot streak.
Powell scored 20 points in Team CP3’s opening win over JL3 on Monday, looking impressive in the process. Terrence Oglesby tweeted out a big positive about Powell after watching him play on Monday:
. @UNC_Basketball commit @powellxdrake is damn good.
Shooting the ball really well and a big time athlete playing for @2024CP3
Had someone compare him to a jump shooting Theo Pinson and I’m not mad at the comparison.
He’s climbing the rims today.

That’s certainly good news for Powell and his stock moving forward to earn the attention right away. But this is nothing new for UNC fans who have followed the North Carolina native’s recruitment.
Powell committed as a four-star recruit and has gotten better each and every month from his junior year of high school all the way up until now on the AAU circuit. He doesn’t appear to be slowing down either and could hold his place as a top recruit in this class by the time he gets on UNC’s campus.
