Umpire cameras made a triumphant return for Opening Day 2023 and it was awesome

These MLB umpire camera views are incredible.

Baseball fans were absolutely delighted to see the return of umpire cameras for the start of a new season.

Amidst a chaotic Opening Day 2023 that saw some real hilarious hijinks — proving that yes, baseball really is back — fans got front-row seats to the return of a highly-requested feature. Yes, the umpire cameras that made waves during the 2022 All-Star Game have returned!

On ESPN’s Thursday night broadcast between the Houston Astros and Chicago White Sox, home plate umpire Bill Miller was connected to a camera that gave fans a close-up point of view to all the action. At multiple points during the game, the broadcast cut to the umpire camera feed, showing just how fast plays happen and how little time everyone has to react to the action.

Pretty cool! Here’s hoping ESPN keeps the umpire cameras going all season long, as they’re a great showcase into the inner workings of baseball. After all, the best seat in the house is right behind all the action!
