Former Connecticut guard Stephon Castle was selected with the fourth overall pick by the San Antonio Spurs on Wednesday in the 2024 NBA draft.
Castle was named the Big East Freshman of the Year after averaging 11.1 points, 4.7 rebounds and 2.9 assists on 47.2% shooting from the field. He is the sixth player in program history to win the award and the first since Daniel Hamilton in the 2014-15 season.
The 6-foot-6 guard emerged as a key player for the Huskies this year, helping them win their second straight national championship. He totaled 36 points, 10 rebounds and five assists in two games in the Final Four as UConn knocked off Alabama and Purdue.

Castle becomes the first player to be selected with the fourth pick by the Spurs. He is only the fifth top-five pick in franchise history, joining Victor Wembanyama (No. 1), Tim Duncan (No. 1), Sean Elliot (No. 3) and David Robinson (No. 1).
The 19-year-old emerged as a great perimeter defender with the Huskies, given his size, versatility and instincts, and was often matched up with opposing teams’ best players. After a strong predraft process, he solidified himself as a top-five pick.
Castle will join a roster headlined by reigning Rookie of the Year Victor Wembanyama, Jeremy Sochan, Keldon Johnson, Devin Vassell and Blake Wesley, among others.
