Tyson Fury wants to fight UFC champ with 4-ounce gloves, but under boxing rules

“I don’t want to go into an MMA fight, like rolling around on the floor and all that.”

Over the past few months, heavyweight boxing star [autotag]Tyson Fury[/autotag] has expressed interest in competing in MMA. He’s even engaged in back-and-forth exchanges with top UFC heavyweights [autotag]Stipe Miocic[/autotag] and [autotag]Francis Ngannou[/autotag] on social media.

On Saturday, however, Fury set the record straight. While he wants to compete inside a cage with four-ounce MMA gloves, he’d want to do so under boxing rules.

“I don’t want to go into an MMA fight, like rolling around on the floor and all that,” Fury told ESPN Radio. “I would fight one of their champions in small gloves. Maybe in a cage, but with boxing rules … with UFC gloves. With the four-ounce gloves, that would be good for me.”

Fury is currently atop the boxing world. His Feb. 22 rematch against Deontay Wilder is expected to be a huge combat sports success. However, Fury reiterated success isn’t a reason not to venture outside of the norm.

“You don’t want to be unsuccessful at what you do to want to have a go at something else, do you?” said Fury, who late last year took part in a WWE match. “You don’t have to be on a losing streak or something to want to venture into something else. I’m one of those type of person – adventurous and willing to try other things.

“I’m doing very well. I’m making a lot of money out of boxing. I’m at the top of my game, but I’d still love to go in the cage and have a fight with somebody with little gloves on. Let’s see what it’s like to get punched in the face with the four ouncers on rather than 10.”

So who would Fury like to face in his cage debut? Whoever holds the UFC heavyweight title, he indicated. At the moment, the man with UFC heavyweight gold is Miocic. Fury said he’ll meet with UFC president Dana White after Feb. 22 and discuss the logistics of a potential matchup.

“Yeah, I think it would be (Miocic),” Fury said. “After I beat Deontay Wilder next month, I’m going to have a sit-down with Dana. We’re going to run some numbers and see if this fight makes sense. Whoever is available from that side and whoever is willing to get their ass kicked by the heavyweight champion of the world, he’s the one I want.”
