Tyrese Haliburton has been most commonly projected to be selected seventh in the NBA draft but the former Iowa State forward could go even higher than that, based on a report by longtime columnist Gery Woelfel.
Haliburton earned Second Team All-Big 12 honors last season after averaging 15.2 points, 6.5 assists, 5.9 rebounds and 2.5 steals in 22 games. He shot 50.4% from the field and 41.9% from 3-point range on 5.6 attempts per game.
Given his 6-foot-5 frame, and 7-foot wingspan, Haliburton is viewed as perhaps one of the most NBA-ready 3-and-D prospects in the draft. As a result, he is garnering strong interest from the two teams atop the draft, according to Woelfel.
Haliburton, a native of Oshkosh who played the last two seasons at Iowa State, is quietly drawing keen interest from the Minnesota Timberwolves and Golden State Warriors, who currently have the first and second picks, respectively, in the Nov. 18 draft. … According to sources, Haliburton has already talked and met with Minnesota officials on multiple occasions. Next week, he is expected to meet with a contingent of Warriors officials.
The Warriors have long been high on Haliburton during the pre-draft process and even compared him to Shaun Livingston. He projects to be a good fit around Stephen Curry and Klay Thompson that can add shooting and defense off of the bench.
Haliburton certainly has the skill set that most teams covet and he could find himself near the top of several teams’ draft boards. Whether or not those teams are selecting first and second is another question…
