The Patrick Mahomes-Tyreek Hill connection has emerged as one of the most unstoppable QB-WR duos in the NFL over the last three seasons, but the All-Pro wide receiver admitted that he was initially second-guessing the Chiefs’ decision to draft Mahomes with the 10th overall pick in 2017.
During an appearance on Inside the NFL, Hill was asked by Phil Simms what his first impression of Mahomes was when the rookie quarterback arrived in training camp.
It’s easy to forget that Mahomes wasn’t even considered to be the top QB prospect in his draft class in 2017, let alone a future MVP, despite his prolific numbers at Texas Tech and his impressive measurables at the combine. There were serious concerns about Mahomes’ decision-making and mechanics. When Hill first saw Mahomes on the field, the wide receiver thought his new teammate was “trash.”

Phil Simms: “What was your thought after you watched him that first week in training camp?”
Tyreek Hill: “I thought he was trash. I ain’t gonna cap. I ain’t even gonna cap man. When he first got there, I was like… ‘this who y’all drafted right here?’ He proved me into a whole, complete… I don’t know. It’s just that second year his quarterback mechanics were different. It was like he was spending more time with his quarterbacks coach, spending more time with coach Reid, learning the offense. Dude was like different.”
Mahomes noticed the clip and fired back with the legendary Nick Young is confused GIF.
