Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro may only be in his first season in the NBA but the rookie from Kentucky sure handled the Rookie of the Year debate like a seasoned veteran in a recent interview.
Of course, his Heat teammate, Kendrick Nunn, emerged as one of the top rookies this season and is in the conversation for Rookie of the Year but many view Memphis Grizzlies guard Ja Morant as the frontrunner to win the award.
Nunn said in an interview with the Sun-Sentinel last week that he should be the Rookie of the Year, a statement that Morant laughed off on social media. Herro addressed Nunn’s claim on a recent episode of the “Pull Up Podcast with C.J. McCollum” and handled it perfectly.
“Kendrick Nunn should definitely be in the conversation, for sure,” Herro said. “I can’t really say who I think will be Rookie of the Year but Ja is my guy, too. I think Ja is definitely deserving of the award; I think they both are. I think what Ja has done, obviously, took things to the next level. Kendrick does have a great point in what he said. He told no lies at all.”
Nunn has posted 15.6 points, 3.4 assists and 2.7 rebounds per game this season and Morant is averaging 17.6 points, 6.9 assists and 3.5 rebounds. Nunn is second to Morant in scoring and field goals made while Morant leads all rookies in assists.
While Herro stopped short of crowning a winner for the Rookie of the Year award, he offered a diplomatic response to the question and likely saved himself from some grief from Nunn.
