Miami Heat guard Tyler Herro on Tuesday was named to the 2019-20 NBA All-Rookie Second Team to become the seventh player in team history to receive that honor.
The 13th overall pick averaged 13.5 points, 4.1 rebounds and 2.2 assists in 55 games played this season while he shot 38.9% from 3-point range. He finished sixth in scoring and third in 3-pointers made among qualified rookies.
Herro received 23 first-team votes and 69 second-team votes from a panel of 100 sportswriters and broadcasters to finish sixth in the final results. He was just one point shy of placing on the First Team, where he believed he should have finished.
“I’m happy for myself and the rest of the guys who made it,” Herro said on Wednesday. “I felt like I could have been on the First Team but I’m happy with what I got.”
The 20-year-old joined teammate Kendrick Nunn to place on an All-Rookie Team after Nunn was named to the First Team. The two players became the fourth pair of Heat rookies to be named to an All-Rookie Team in the same season.
Herro has emerged as a key player for the Heat during the postseason and has played meaningful minutes to this point. He has hit a number of clutch shots, including two late 3-pointers in Game 1 versus the Boston Celtics to complete a 14-point comeback to win.
Herro recorded 12 points, 11 rebounds and nine assists in the Heat’s Game 1 win and nearly joined Hall of Famer Magic Johnson in the history books. Herro finished one assist short of a triple-double and would have tied Johnson as the second-youngest player with a playoff triple-double.
Herro hasn’t often looked like a rookie this season and has proven time and time again that he isn’t afraid of the moment during the postseason. He came up big for the Heat and will likely continue to do so in the future.
