Tyler Adams named USMNT captain for the World Cup

The 23-year-old is the youngest U.S. skipper at a World Cup since 1950

Tyler Adams said on Thursday that he had “no idea” who would captain the U.S. national team at the World Cup.

Three days later, on the eve of the first USMNT World Cup game in eight and a half years, the team’s captain was revealed.

It was, unsurprisingly, Tyler Adams.

Gregg Berhalter named the midfielder as his captain throughout the tournament, after going with a captain-by-committee approach during his tenure coaching the USMNT.

“We’re proud to announce Tyler as the captain for the World Cup. We think he has great leadership capabilities,” Berhalter said at a press conference on Sunday.

“He leads by his actions and his words, so we’re proud to have him as a captain.”

Adams has worn the armband three times so far in 2022, and nine times out of his 32 total caps.

At 23, Adams is the youngest player to captain the USMNT at a World Cup since 1950.

The New York native will be wearing the armband on Monday when the USMNT kicks off its World Cup campaign against Wales at Al-Rayyan Stadium.
