BOLTON, Massachusetts — The International and the associated Twin Springs golf courses have officially been sold to Escalante Golf, completing a sales process that began in November. And plans are to open in the spring.
Previously owned by Daniel and Florence Weadock, the Bolton golf course had a top reputation before closing during the pandemic and eventually being sold as part of a bankruptcy proceeding.
The course is the 18th for the Texas-based firm, Town Administrator Don Lowe told selectmen Thursday, Feb. 11. Most of the courses are in the south.
Lowe said he had had a good meeting with senior management, who had hired a general manager and were hiring other staff.
“They are looking to be as aggressive as possible with an opening,” Lowe said.
He noted there would be a request for a change in the liquor license for the two courses, slated for the board’s Feb. 25 agenda.
“They want to start with the Pines and do work on the Oaks,” Lowe with, with hopes to open by summer, though he avoided discussing any potential timeline.
The company indicated in a statement it had a spring 2021 goal for opening.
Lowe said the entire 600-plus property was purchased and the company plans investment.
Lowe said the firm indicated it would be maintaining the two, 18-hole courses at the International while sorting out plans for Twin Springs.
“To allay any fears, there was no discussion of any housing component of any kind. The goal is to be able to restore the International,” Lowe said, with “the cache, the status that it once had.”
He added that, “I have no reason to believe they won’t be able to do that.”
“Our vision is to create a golf-first experience at the highest level that preserves and honors the 120-year legacy of The International,” Escalante Golf President David McDonald said on the club website.
Those emailing The International got a message: “We will reach out soon to help you take the next step in your journey towards experiencing where pure golf and nature intersect at the only 36 hole private golf club in greater Boston.”
The International had been owned by the Arklow Limited Partnership, headed by Daniel Weadock, and associated businesses, The International Golf Club, LLC and Wealyn, LLC.
