Two NASCAR drivers linked to Joe Gibbs Racing in Cup Series for 2025

Two NASCAR drivers have been linked to Joe Gibbs Racing in the Cup Series. Which drivers could replace Martin Truex Jr. if he retires?

[autotag]Joe Gibbs Racing[/autotag]’s lineup in the NASCAR Cup Series could change for the 2025 season. As of now, Joe Gibbs Racing expects Martin Truex Jr. to return next year, but a retirement decision hasn’t been made yet. However, what would happen if Truex does retire after the 2024 season? Joe Gibbs Racing has been linked to two drivers in its program.

According to The Athletic’s Jordan Bianchi, Aric Almirola and Chandler Smith would likely receive consideration as candidates to replace Truex if he doesn’t return to the No. 19 car next year. Almirola recently stepped away from full-time racing in the Cup Series while Smith is a rising star for Joe Gibbs Racing in the NASCAR Xfinity Series.

Almirola would be a good option if Joe Gibbs Racing wants a veteran option; however, does he want a full 38-race schedule moving forward? Meanwhile, Smith would be the best replacement as he continues to excel in the Xfinity Series. Joe Gibbs Racing hopes that Truex returns in 2025, but Smith and Almirola would be excellent in-house replacements for the No. 19 car.
