Nobody was more shocked than Tennessee Titans fans after learning that the New York Jets were reportedly hiring former offensive coordinator Todd Downing as the passing-game coordinator.
Downing was plain bad at calling plays during his time with the Titans, but it was the passing attack that struggled the most. Granted, talent was definitely an issue in 2022, but he also did nothing to help elevate the group.
Making this situation even more shocking is the fact that the Jets also hired former Titans offensive line coach Keith Carter and have Nathaniel Hackett as their play-caller.
Carter oversaw some putrid offensive lines and seemed to rub his players the wrong way, and Hackett was the head coach of the Denver Broncos in 2022, a team that was even more of a mess offensively than the Titans but with way more talent.
This is so on brand for the Jets to try and turn over a new leaf on offense with three coaches who were mediocre to terrible at their last jobs. Nevertheless, it’s safe to say the reaction to Downing landing a new gig was shock.
