In the second quarter of Sunday’s game against the Denver Broncos, Kansas City Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes was tackled by safety Brandon Jones on a two-yard run that was negated by a penalty.
After the play, Mahomes jokingly (?) asked the referee to tell him when defenders were getting close. The remark seemed to be made in jest, but fans on Twitter/X were quick to react to the outrageous request from the QB.
Patrick Mahomes caught on a hot mic asking a ref if they can let him know when a defender is close to him. (Turn sound on)
Can we get @NFL to investigate this? pic.twitter.com/vdjHNJA9O8

Did Mahomes really just ask the ref to let him know when the defender is getting close?

Patrick Mahomes just asked the ref to let him know when the defenders were getting close to tackling him. In the game of tackle football.

The Chiefs were penalized on the play for having an offensive tackle line up in the backfield, so it’s also possible that Mahomes might have been asking for a warning when his linemen aren’t lining up correctly. Regardless, NFL fans weren’t pleased by the the audio captured by the CBS broadcast.
