The North Carolina Tar Heels added another player to their 2023-24 roster, going to the transfer portal to land former West Virginia forward James Okonkwo.
Despite not visiting as he had planned to later in the month, Okonkwo made the decision to join the Tar Heels and take one of the three remaining scholarships left. It’s a big pickup for the Tar Heels; he adds depth in the post for Hubert Davis’ team.
In just one year at West Virginia, the former three-star recruit averaged 2.5 points, 3.2 rebounds, and 0.7 blocks in 11 minutes per game. He appeared in 31 games last season. Okonkwo should have a bigger role with the Tar Heels, competing for time off the bench in UNC’s rotation.
