The positive reviews are pouring in for newly-hired New England Patriots coach Jerod Mayo, following his introductory press conference on Wednesday.
There wasn’t much in the way of answers regarding the vacant general manager role, but the objective was more about celebrating Mayo’s promotion, while also putting him in front of cameras and giving Patriots fans and media a chance to see him in a head coaching position.
So far, so good.
Mayo cracked jokes with owner Robert Kraft, who he kept referring to by the nickname “Thunder”. He also got serious when explaining the importance of him being the first black head coach in Patriots’ franchise history.
The biggest takeaway, however, is that Mayo isn’t a junior version of Bill Belichick. He’s his own man, as Belichick was his own man in the 24 years he spent in New England.
