Head coach Mel Tucker is hopeful he’ll know who will be his starting quarterback against Penn State by Wednesday.

Tucker told reporters during his weekly press conference that junior Rocky Lombardi was feeling better on Monday, and that he is hoping to have a decision made on who will start at quarterback by Wednesday.

Lombardi was replaced by redshirt freshman Payton Thorne in MSU’s last game vs. Ohio State after Lombardi suffered an apparent head injury. Lombardi had been struggling vs. the Buckeyes prior to the injury, completing only 5-of-11 pass attempts for 33 yards and one interception.

Thorne experienced more success in replacing Lombardi vs. the Buckeyes. He completed his first 11 passes of the game, and finished with 147 yards and one interception on 16-of-25 passing attempts. Thorne also ran for 42 yards and one touchdown this past week.

Lombardi has started all six games this year. Should Thorne get the start, it would be his first career start as a Spartan.
