Tua Tagovailoa’s fifth-year option was picked up early to silence media chatter

In an effort to silence the constant noise surrounding Tua Tagovailoa, the Miami Dolphins wasted no time in picking up his fifth-year option.

Miami Dolphins quarterback Tua Tagovailoa had his fifth-year option picked up in early March, which is relatively early considering the deadline is May 2. Now, Tagovailoa will be with the Miami Dolphins through the 2024 season.

Tagovailoa is the first quarterback from the 2020 NFL draft class to have his fifth year picked up. The Bengals with Joe Burrow and the Chargers with Justin Herbert still have not yet reached an agreement on an extension, nor has the option been selected by their respective franchises.

When speaking with the media recently, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel was asked about why the team exercised his option so quickly. McDaniel’s answer was plain and simple. “The media members in South Florida, we need to tell them,” said McDaniel. “That way I didn’t have to pay unnecessary poker face for no reason”

After three seasons in the NFL, Tagovailoa still faces constant, and sometimes unwarranted, criticism, doubt and hostility from fans and analysts all across the nation.

Having a head coach that is focused on protecting his QB1 is important and vital to ensuring Tagvailoa can maintain the MVP-level confidence we saw early in the 2022 season.
