Tua Tagovailoa participation in training camp is ‘very fluid’ situation

Tua Tagovailoa will be in training camp, but how much he’ll participate is in question.

Tua Tagovailoa reported for training camp and will practice with the team amid his ongoing contract negotiations with the Miami Dolphins. How much he’ll participate is the bigger question, though.

On Wednesday, Dolphins head coach Mike McDaniel told reporters that the plan for Tagovailoa’s participation is “very fluid.”

“I think it’s important to acknowledge that Tua’s in the midst of a contract negotiation,” McDaniel said. “That’s important to him and the football team. That being said, we communicate very well and it’s very fluid, we’re taking it day by day. Today I expect it to be kind of like OTAs and we’ll move on from there.”

Earlier in the offseason, Tagovailoa participated in individual drills and 7-on-7 drills, but sat out 11-on-11 drills at OTAs. Presumably, that will continue to be the plan for the time being.

Tagovailoa is currently set to play the 2024 season on the fifth-year option of his rookie contract and is set to become a free agent in 2025. According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter, a new deal for the Dolphins quarterback is still presumably coming, although talks aren’t as far along as the Green Bay Packers’ with Jordan Love.
