Cuts are coming in a flurry around the NFL as teams have been busy making roster cuts to get down to the 85-man limit at this point in the NFL’s preseason schedule. Among the recent players being let go into the free agent pool on Tuesday was Troy Apke, the typical underdog who earned the respect of others during his time at Penn State.
Apke was released by the Washington Commanders, the team officially announced on Tuesday.

Apke was a fourth-round draft pick of Washington in the 2018 NFL draft, and he spent all four seasons of his NFL career to date with the franchise. Apke has played a role on special teams for Washington and even earned a starting job on defense to start the 2020 season. However, Apke lost the starting job at safety after struggling early in the season and was converted to cornerback as a result.
Apke resigned with the Commanders in March of this year as the team came to terms with a number of players prior to the NFL draft.
Assuming Apke latches on with another NFL team, he will be entering his fifth season in the NFL.
