Trojans Wire editor Matt Zemek made the point on the new Trojans: Wired podcast that while bad calls played far too great a role in shaping the outcome of the USC-Utah game this past weekend, the Utes still fully earned their victory and deserve to celebrate as though they achieved something substantial.
Many people will reasonably say that it’s impossible to fully credit a team for winning a game and yet also say that bad calls decided a game. How can those two viewpoints coexist with each other and create a consistent, integrated view of a game, its outcome, and how we assign credit to the victorious team?
Early in this podcast with producer and co-host Ian Hest, Zemek makes a specific point involving the 1985 World Series, specifically Game 6 between the St. Louis Cardinals and the eventual World Series champion Kansas City Royals. That is a representative example of how a bad call can decide a competition, and yet the winning team can still be given full credit for what it achieved.
