The Doak Walker Award is given annually to the top running back in college football. The Colorado Buffaloes, with their new roster and a new head coach, have three running backs who landed on the preseason watchlist Wednesday.
The three players are Kavosiey Smoke, Sy’veon Wilkerson and Alton McCaskill IV.
It’s not often that the Buffs have even one running back make the list, so three in the same year is outstanding. Wilkerson followed head coach Deion Sanders from Jackson State and has a lot of familiarity with quarterback Shedeur Sanders.
Smoke transferred from Kentucky and has an impressive highlight reel. But McCaskill might be the best of the bunch despite missing all of his final season in Houston due to injury. Early on, McCaskill is catching eyeballs at Buffs camp and there’s a path to him being the lead back.
This is terrific news for Coach Prime and offensive coordinator Sean Lewis, who have a logjam at running back. But, it’s better to have too much talent than not enough.
