Nebraska wide receiver Trey Palmer, a former 5-star recruit and current junior with the Huskers, earned a nod to the Paul Hornung Award watch list on Thursday, becoming the fourth Cornhusker to earn a spot on a preseason award watch list.
The Paul Hornung Award is given to the most versatile player in college football and Palmer showed his dynamic chops as an electric receiver and return specialist with the LSU Tigers in 2021 before following now-associate head coach and wide receiver coach Mickey Joseph from LSU to Nebraska in January.
The Kentwood, Louisiana native broke out as a receiver in his third year at LSU in 2021, reeling in 30 catches for 344 yards and reaching paydirt 3 times. In his first two years in Baton Rouge, Palmer’s work was centered more around the return game, highlighted by a kick return for a 93-yard touchdown in 2020, along with a 54-yard punt return in his freshman season of 2019. Palmer returned 18 punts for 115 yards and seven kicks for 140 yards last year.
Husker teammates Ochaun Mathis and Luke Reimer were also listed on preseason award watch lists, with Mathis earning consideration for the Bronco Nagurski Award (given to the best defensive player in college football) and Reimer being tabbed on the Dick Butkus Award watch list (given to the best linebacker in college football). Sophomore offensive lineman Ethan Piper was a nominee for the Allstate Good Works Award for his involvement with various local and charitable organizations.
