Trey Lance takes 1st QB reps at training camp

Trey Lance got the first snaps at QB for the #49ers on Wednesday with Brock Purdy out.

The offseason-long question about which 49ers quarterback would get the first snaps of training camp was answered Wednesday when San Francisco took the field for an open practice.

Trey Lance was under center to begin team drills according to reporters at the team’s facility. Lance, Sam Darnold and Brandon Allen all saw action during that period. Brock Purdy got the day off as he eases his way in to full practices after offseason elbow surgery.

ESPN’s Nick Wagoner wrote that Lance got four reps, followed by four for Darnold, and then two for Allen. They repeated that cycle through the team session.

It wouldn’t be a huge surprise to see the order on these rearranged throughout camp.

A bigger deal in terms of practice snaps will be if a player falls out of the rotation completely or one player starts earning a lion’s share of the reps with any regularity.

Ultimately the first snaps of camp aren’t going to determine anything. Performances throughout camp, joint practices with the Raiders, and the preseason will decide which player is QB2 when the team opens the regular season in Pittsburgh.
