Heading into the 2022 season, former Clemson quarterback Trevor Lawrence is eager to prove why the Jacksonville Jaguars selected him No. 1 overall in the 2021 NFL Draft.
After his tumultuous rookie season, Lawrence is happy to have a “clean slate” and live up to the hype that was surrounding him as he left Clemson.
“There’s a lot of motivation,” Lawrence said on Monday. “Personally, I want to prove I belong here and that I’m the player that I believe I am and this organization believes I am. As a team, I think we have a lot to prove. We didn’t have a great year last year.”
In 2021, Lawrence completed 59.6% of his passes for 3,641 yards, 12 touchdowns and 17 interceptions.
Those statistics were an anomaly compared to his numbers at Clemson, where he had one of the most productive college football careers of all time.
In 40 games with the Tigers, Lawrence completed 66.6% of his passes for 10,098 yards, 90 touchdowns and 17 interceptions, leading Clemson to three consecutive College Football Playoff appearances and a national championship in 2018.
With those accomplishments, Lawrence proved himself in college. Now, it’s just a matter of if Lawrence can replicate that level of success in the NFL, and his new head coach Doug Pederson believes he can.
“That’s the goal, obviously, is to make a significant jump in year two,” Pederson said. “And I think building off of last year, the fact that he played the entire season, we can build off of that and really expect kind of a ‘sky is the limit’ mentality with him. He’s in the same frame of mind as well. He wants to take that next step, not only in his growth but obviously leading this football team.”
