The 49ers will have to face the Rams on Sunday without starting left tackle Trent Williams, who was ruled out with an elbow injury that kept him out of practice in the week leading up to the game. Quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, listed as ‘questionable’ with a thumb injury, is officially active for San Francisco.
Rookie Jaylon Moore figures to start at left tackle in Williams’ absence. Starting nickel cornerback K’Waun Williams, who was activated off the COVID-19 list Saturday, is also out.
Here’s who won’t suit up for the 49ers:
LT Trent Williams
CB K’Waun Williams
LB Azeez Al-Shaair
S Jarrod Wilson
LB Marcell Harris
DL Maurice Hurst
With Williams out, Dontae Johnson is next up at the nickel corner spot. Emmanuel Moseley and either Ambry Thomas or Josh Norman will start outside.
At quarterback it became apparent Saturday when QB Nate Sudfeld wasn’t elevated from the practice squad that Garoppolo would play, but his exclusion from the inactives made the assumed official.
Garoppolo’s role is still a question mark, but the presumption is he’ll be the club’s starting quarterback. Whether he plays every snap remains to be seen after he split practice reps with rookie signal caller Trey Lance in the week leading up to Sunday’s game.
Another name that didn’t show up on the inactives is LB Dre Greenlaw who will start at Will linebacker with Al-Shaair sidelined. Demetrius Flannigan-Fowles figures to be the Sam LB.
