The Cincinnati Bengals reportedly won’t see elite San Francisco 49ers left tackle Trent Williams on Sunday.
According to The Athletic’s Dianna Russini, Williams isn’t expected to play in the Week 8 matchup as the team opts to give him an additional week to rest his ankle, meaning this week and the Week 9 bye.
That’s a huge swing if Williams doesn’t play. It would make sense in the long-term for a 49ers team with Super Bowl aspirations, but missing the best left tackle in football against a player like Bengals edge rusher Trey Hendrickson is a massive problem.
The 49ers already had big issues offensively with Williams hobbled over the course of the current two-game losing streak and quarterback Brock Purdy was in concussion protocol from Wednesday to Saturday this week.
Keep in mind the 49ers also won’t have star wide receiver Deebo Samuel on the field.
All this, with the 49ers on a short week after playing last Monday while the Bengals enter off a bye week with Joe Burrow reportedly at 100 percent.
