The NBA is currently negotiating with the NBPA on how teams can utilize players signed to two-way contracts once the season restarts on July 31 at the Wide World of Sports Complex at the Walt Disney World Resort near Orlando, Florida.
Currently, players signed to two-way contracts would be left out of the bubble environment in order to limit the size of a team’s traveling party. Teams are reportedly petitioning the NBA to allow the inclusion of two-way players as insurance for potential sickness or injury.
Players on two-way contracts are not currently permitted to appear in the playoffs, though it is unclear if the NBA would grant an exception to allow teams the ability to utilize those players in the postseason. According to Adrian Wojnarowski of ESPN, teams can begin converting players signed to two-way contracts to standard NBA deals on June 22.
For a team like the Boston Celtics, bringing two-way contract player Tremont Waters to Disney could be beneficial. Waters played well when called upon this season and would offer the Celtics some added depth and playmaking ability. As a result, the Celtics would likely bring Waters to Disney, according to Jared Weiss of The Athletic.
Of course, the Celtics also have Tacko Fall signed to a two-way contract but the team currently has three centers ahead of Fall on the roster and may not need him in Orlando. Teams are also expected to have the ability to sign free agents should the need arise.
The NBA and NBPA are expected to negotiate the possibility of expanding the rosters from 15 players to 17 players with the inclusion of two-way contracts so Waters and Fall could both join the Celtics at Disney.
