Tremont Waters named 2019-20 NBA G League Rookie of the Year

Waters averaged 18 points, 7.3 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 1.9 steals in 36 games with the Maine Red Claws.

Boston Celtics two-way rookie Tremont Waters on Thursday was named the 2019-20 NBA G League Rookie of the Year, the league announced in a press release.

Waters emerged as perhaps one of the top guards in the G League this season. He averaged 18 points, 7.3 assists, 3.2 rebounds and 1.9 steals in 36 games with the Maine Red Claws, finishing sixth in assists per game among all players and 14th in steals.

Waters helped the Red Claws finish third in the Eastern Conference with a 28-14 record. He was named the G League Player of the Month in November and previously earned a place on the 2019-20 Midseason All-NBA G League Team.

Salt Lake City Stars forward Jarrell Brantley and South Bay Lakers forward Devontae Cacok finished second and third, respectively, in voting for the 2019-20 G League Rookie of the Year Award.

On June 4, the G League announced the 2019-20 season was officially canceled due to the coronavirus pandemic. The season was suspended indefinitely on March 12 and the expectation around the league was the season would eventually be canceled.

On Wednesday, the G League announced that Delaware Blue Coats center Christ Koumadje was named the Defensive Player of the Year after leading the league in blocks.
