Transfer portal: Big Ten standout Trill Carter has left Minnesota

Minnesota defensive tackle Trill Carter is in the transfer portal.

Minnesota defensive tackle Trill Carter entered the transfer portal on Friday.

Last season, he was an honorable mention All-Big Ten selection. He posted a career-high 19 tackles last season. He also had 1.5 sacks, tied for his personal best.

Carter has one year of eligibility left. As a sophomore and a junior, he played under then Minnesota defensive coordinator Joe Harasymiak, who is now the defensive coordinator at Rutgers.

There should be no shortage of interest in Carter, who is a solid 6-foot-2 and 300 pounds. In the Pinstripe Bowl, a 28-20 win by Minnesota over Syracuse, Carter had three tackles and half-a-sack.

For Rutgers, there could be a need on the interior defensive line and Carter certainly has a strong resume.

Earlier this offseason, the Scarlet Knights added Isaiah Iton, a transfer from Ole Miss who has two years of eligibility remaining. Iton had  25 total tackles along with 1.5 sacks and a pass defended in three seasons with the SEC program.

There are certainly some strong Minnesota connections on the Rutgers coaching staff as both offensive coordinator Kirk Ciarrocca and the aforementioned Harasymiak were with the Golden Gophers prior to their time at Rutgers.

Last offseason, Rutgers added offensive lineman Curtis Dunlap, who started at guard this past season for the Scarlet Knights. Dunlap had previously played at Minnesota.
