On Sunday morning, Texas A&M secured its third commitment from the transfer portal, bringing in former Georgia starting cornerback Julian Humphrey, who will return to the greater Houston area for his junior season.
Humphrey’s journey to Texas A&M started a year prior during head coach Mike Elko’s inaugural offseason. The talented defender chose to return to Georgia but soon decided to re-enter the transfer portal just days after Georgia’s victory over Texas in the SEC Championship game.
Starting ten games with the Bulldogs this season, Humphrey nearly led all corners on the roster in several categories, and according to Pro Football Focus, Humphrey earned 2nd highest defensive grade (69) among Georgia cornerbacks, a 69 coverage grade, and first in catch percentage (56%) on the team.
Primarily slotted out wide, Humphrey perfectly pairs with returning senior cornerback Will Lee III, who finished the 2024 season with a 73 coverage grade and 47% catch percentage.
With the boundary secure, Humphrey’s addition aids cornerback Dezz Rick’s development while letting several incoming defensive backs from the 2025 class also learn instead of having to take the field immediately.
Most importantly, if veteran cornerback Tyreek Chappell returns on a medical redshirt next season, this shores up the slot. At the same time, junior corners Jayvon Thomas and Bravion Rogers also have room to grow.
A successful secondary relies on depth and starting talent, and the Aggies appear to have achieved this.
