Trae Young is now officially a NBA superstar.
Well, he has been for a while but if he wasn’t considered that by some before last night then he made it official for everyone in the Hawks’ 116-113 win over the Bucks in Game 1 of the Eastern Conference Finals.
Young was once again unbelievably fun to watch and unbelievably hard to defend last night in Milwaukee. He finished with 48(!) points, 11 assists (including this stunning lob off the glass to John Collins), and 7 rebounds.
Here are some of the wild things he and the Bucks accomplished last night.
– Young tied LeBron James as being the only player age 22 or younger to score 48 points in a playoff game.
– He scored or assisted on 72 of the Hawks’ points, which is a NBA record for a conference final game.
– The Hawks became the first team since the 1998-99 Knicks, and just the fourth team in NBA history, to win three Game 1s on the road in one postseason.
While those numbers are impressive, if you throw them away and just look at the beauty with how Young plays the game then you’ll understand how much fun it has been to watch him play in the playoffs over the past month.
Young has been electric since Game 1 with the Knicks back on May 23. He’s averaged 30.5 points and 10.5 assists in the 13 playoff games he’s played in and he has without a doubt led the league in swagger.
Now he and the Hawks are three wins away from a trip to the NBA Finals.
Something tells me that’s a stage he can’t wait to be on and it’s one I can’t wait to see him on.
Though the Bucks still have plenty of life left and will have a lot to say about that.
But if you’re like me and don’t have a team left in this thing then Young and the Hawks are an easy, and tremendously fun, one to get behind.
