Trace McSorley fighting for Ravens backup quarterback spot

Will an injury prevent Trace McSorley from winning the backup QB job with the Baltimore Ravens?

The Baltimore Ravens currently have a race between two players of who is going to be Lamar Jackson’s backup at quarterback. The first one is former Utah quarterback Tyler Huntley, who was signed undrafted after the 2020 draft. The second one is a name Penn State fans are very familiar with, Trace McSorley.

McSorley, whom the Ravens selected in the sixth round in the 2019 draft, saw action in two games last season when Jackson was out with COVID-19. In those two games, McSorley threw a touchdown pass and had a 30% completion rating.

With the Ravens benching several starters in their first preseason game including Lamar Jackson, Huntley and McSorley had their chance to start earning their shot at the QB2 spot. McSorley went 11/18 for 86 yards and an interception while rushing for 25 yards on four attempts.

Huntley went 12/16 for 77 yards and an interception while rushing for 43 yards on the ground, including a touchdown.

Head coach John Harbaugh did mention that McSorley was dealing with a back issue, which affected his ability to move around efficiently and be more mobile than he was. Regardless, with limited time on the field, McSorely still put up promising numbers to build off of.

Throughout training camp and preseason, both quarterbacks have shown their own flashes. However, there hasn’t really been one that has stood out more than the other.

With two weeks left of the preseason, time is ticking until that final depth chart is released. However, ESPN’s Adam Schefter reports McSorley will be out for the rest of the preseason, giving Huntley more opportunities to earn that backup spot.

Many would say that the backup job belongs to McSorley based on experience. However, Huntley is certainly giving him a run for his money.
