Is Arizona Cardinals quarterback Kyler Murray good with the deep ball? Apparently, there is some question. He did not make Touchdown Wire’s list of the 10 best quarterbacks at deep passes. OK, that is fine. However, Football Outsiders considers him the most accurate deep passer in the entire league.
Now, Touchdown Wire’s Doug Farrar wrote about the 10 worst quarterbacks with the deep ball.
He includes Murray on his list at No. 7.
The 2019 Offensive Rookie of the Year, Murray had an unquestionably wonderful inaugural NFL campaign, but if he’s to rise to the proverbial next level, he’ll need to cut down on the picks. Late in the 2019 season, Murray proved especially vulnerable to opposing defenders jumping his throws, and that’s why a league-leading seven of his 10 picks on routes requiring deep passes came in the second half of the season.
That is a metric that is worth noting. Seven of his picks were on deep throws. That isn’t good.
That still leaves us with the question as to whether Murray is good or not at deep throws.
His accuracy rating suggests that he is. His interceptions suggest he is not. Are the interceptions accurate throws and bad decisions? Are they from receivers making mistakes? Are they from defenders making great plays?
Those are the questions to ask. The accuracy suggests he can do it well and the results suggest perhaps more of an issue with execution or decisions.
We will see what 2020 does for Murray in terms of deep-ball passses.
