Raptors at Spurs: Odds, betting lines, predictions and picks
Prediction
Spurs 117, Raptors 113
Money line (ML)
The Raptors got out to a first-half lead in their last game before getting dismantled by the New Orleans Pelicans 113-99 as 3.5-point favorites in their temporary Tampa Bay digs. Toronto was outrebounded 45-35 and the Pelicans outshot the Raptors from deep 45.2% to 30.4%, sinking five more 3’s.
The Spurs notched an impressive 131-119 road victory over the Memphis Grizzlies as 2-point underdogs Wednesday. Former Raptors PF DeMar DeRozan was outstanding vs. the Grizzlies. He scored 28 points on 7-for-14 shooting, was 14 of 15 from the charity stripe, and added 9 rebounds and 9 assists.
The two teams split last season’s two head-to-head meetings with the road team winning and covering. In fact, prior to Toronto’s 110-106 victory and ATS win over San Antonio last season, the Spurs covered seven straight meetings with the Raptors.
Revenge-game angles are considered square by certain betting communities, but I contend that they make the biggest difference in NBA regular-season games. DeRozan played nine seasons in Toronto, and you know he wants to show up his previous team and have bragging rights over former teammate PG Kyle Lowry. Additionally, it’s tough handicapping teams’ motivation in the regular season, and I love backing teams whose best player I can count on giving a full effort.
GIMME SPURS (+110) for only a half-unit because I’m going to take them plus the points.
Against the spread (ATS)
Just to be safe, I’ll TAKE SPURS +2.5 (-115) for a unit as insurance for the money line wager. Not only did San Antonio cover seven straight vs. Toronto prior to the last meeting, but the Spurs had a winning ATS record last season as an underdog even though it was the first season they missed the postseason in coach Gregg Popovich’s career.
Over/Under (O/U)
Let’s follow the money and TAKE OVER 228.5 (-110). According to Pregame.com, 93% of the money is on the Over, which has pushed Raptors-Spurs from a 225-opening point total to the current price.
The Raptors will have a bounce-back performance offensively against a Spurs team that was uncharacteristically bad in 2019-20. San Antonio was 25th in opponent’s points per game and defensive efficiency last season.
Also, the Spurs offense started to fill it up last season when it played in the bubble—scoring at least 122 points in five of its final eight games—and looked good in the first game this season.
