Bill Belichick wasn’t able to land a head coaching job in 2024, but that doesn’t mean there weren’t other offers for him on the table.
When appearing on “The TK Show,” San Francisco 49ers coach Kyle Shanahan revealed that he reached out to the six-time Super Bowl-winning coach and offered him a job in whatever capacity he wanted.
“I did. I threw it out to him,” Shanahan told Tim Kawakami, via Niners Wire’s Kyle Madson. “He loves football so much that you never know. I mean, I can’t believe that he’s not a head coach of a team right now. I know what I would do if I was an owner, so that shocks me.
“And the last thing you want to do is insult someone like Bill Belichick, but I know he just loves ball in the simplest form. So I threw it all out to him. Whatever he’d want to do. I was like, ‘would you be interested (in the defensive coordinator job)?’ He was very nice and appreciative, but he politely turned me down.”
Belichick was looking to land another head coaching job in the NFL after splitting with the Patriots.
He now seems content to serve as a temporary analyst until the next head coaching job cycle comes around in 2025.
Shanahan’s comments do create thoughts of what could have been if he teamed up with Belichick for a season. It would have been a dream pairing that might have wreaked havoc on the rest of the league.
Every opponent on the 49ers’ 2024 schedule should thank the stars that Belichick turned down that offer.
