Tony Gonzalez offers to pay fine from Chiefs TE Travis Kelce’s goalpost dunk

The NFL recently fined Travis Kelce for a throwback celebration, but Tony Gonzalez has got his back.

Kansas City Chiefs TE Travis Kelce is certainly known for his post-touchdown celebrations.

Kelce was recently fined by the NFL for a throwback celebration during the Chiefs’ Week 8 win over the New York Jets, but he might get some help paying the fine. That throwback celebration, of course, was the goalpost dunk, popularized by Hall of Fame TE Tony Gonzalez.

The NFL outlawed this popular celebration following the 2013 season. This happened when then-Saints TE Jimmy Graham scored a touchdown during a game against the Falcons in 2013. He did the dunk and it displaced the goalpost, causing the game to be delayed while NFL crews worked to realign the goalpost.

Legend has it that the goalpost is still bent. Check it out:

On Thursday, Gonzalez posted a little throwback photograph of his goalpost dunks on Twitter. While he wasn’t confident he’d still be able to do it today, he was glad that Kelce still does it. He even offered to pay Kelce’s fine from the NFL.

If you needed any convincing that Kelce’s goalpost dunk was all about paying tribute to Gonzalez, he took to Twitter to let everyone know exactly what was on his mind when he was celebrating.

Gonzalez interviewed Kelce after the goalpost dunk ahead of the Week 9 game against the Carolina Panthers. The mutual respect and admiration that these two have for each other are unmatched. You can tell that the legacy of Gonzalez continues to motivate and push Kelce to be great in what is shaping up to be one of the best seasons of his NFL career.
