The facts are simple. Oklahoma has won five conference championships in a row, and Texas head coach Tom Herman wants his shot at the crown.
In a recent interview with Chuck Carlton of the Dallas Morning News, Herman explained his first goal in dethroning the Sooners is “a continued effort to recruit elite talent,”
Since his hiring in November of 2016, Herman has won the recruiting war three out of four years, and has won all three of the full cycles he’s been a apart of. Texas currently leads the Big 12 in recruiting for the 2021 class as well, according to Rivals.
“Hopefully one of these days they’ll stop having first- and second-round draft picks at quarterback,” said Herman. “But we’ve played draft picks, that’s certainly not an excuse at all, we’ve played draft picks at quarterback damn near every week, but those three guys they’ve had in the last three years were special — really, really special.”
Baker Mayfield, Kyler Murray and Jalen Hurts all had special seasons for the Sooners, but he could be stuck waiting awhile if he’s anticipating a drop-off in quarterback play under Lincoln Riley.
Overall, Riley has a 3-1 head-to-head advantage over Herman. Texas returns longtime quarterback Sam Ehlinger and nine defensive starters.
