Tom Brady called it a career after 22 years in the NFL and a legendary run that included seven Super Bowl titles. And while it shouldn’t have been surprising for a 44-year-old quarterback to retire, Brady was walking away from football after one of the best statistical seasons of his career.
There wasn’t a great regression, and he likely had a few more solid years left in the tank. So, of course it only took a couple weeks for Brady to slightly leave the door open for a potential comeback to the NFL.
Though a Brady reversal is unlikely, the future Hall of Famer wasn’t willing to definitively rule it out in an interview with Jim Gray on SiriusXM.
He said via ProFootballTalk:
“You know, I’m just gonna take things as they come. I think that’s the best way to put it and I don’t think anything, you know, you never say never. At the same time I know that I’m very, I feel very good about my decision. I don’t know how I’ll feel six months from now, [inaudible] change, it most likely won’t. But I try to make the best possible decision I can in the moment, which I did this last week. And, again, I think it’s not looking to reverse course, I’m definitely not looking to do that. But in the same time I think you have to be realistic that you never know what challenges there are gonna be in life. Again, I loved playing. I’m looking forward to doing things other than playing.”
And what Brady said did make a lot of sense. He’s never gone a full offseason without needing to work towards the upcoming season. He doesn’t know if he’ll miss the game to the point that he’ll want to come back. He doesn’t know if that competitive urge will take over once players report to OTAs and training camp.
Fans probably shouldn’t count on a Brady comeback, but it was pretty telling how Brady wouldn’t rule it out either.
