Toledo Rockets College Football Preview 2021: Defense

The defense was great, and it’s about to be better. It had a few meltdowns and couldn’t hold on in the wild game against Western Michigan and in the loss to Ball State, but it finished second in the MAC overall allowing 362 yards and 24 points per game. Now all 11 starters are expected to be back.

Dyontae Johnson led the team with 47 tackles, and he’s not alone with the rest of the linebackers returning in the 4-2-5 alignment. The linebackers aren’t in charge of getting into the backfield, but Johnson registered 4.5 sacks. The line will take care of most of that.

Undersized 255-pound tackle Desjuan Johnson led the team with eight sacks in an All-MAC season. Combined with Jamal Hines, the Rockets have tremendous athleticism up front, but the line needs 287-pound David Hood to hold up on the nose.

The Rockets only came up with four interceptions, but they’ve got a strong enough group of defensive backs to do a whole lot more. Nate Bauer earned All-MAC honors at one safety spot, but Tycen Anderson is the best defensive back on the lot, finishing second on the team with 34 tackles. Veteran Samuel Womack is among the league’s top corner – he’s a broken up pass machine – and there’s a good rotation for the outside spots.
