The biggest knock on new Tennessee Titans pass-rusher Vic Beasley is that he’s inconsistent, and his career numbers certainly show that.
After posting a league-high 15.5 sacks in his sophomore campaign in 2016, Beasley totaled 10 sacks the following two seasons and then rebounded to finish with eight in 2019.
Because of that single standout season, Pro Football Focus’ Ben Linsey listed Beasley on the outlet’s “One-Year Wonder Team” at the EDGE position.
“Beasley also cashed in on a new contract this offseason, and part of that check stems from a 2016 season where he led the NFL in sacks. Beasley’s 79.9 pass-rushing grade in 2016 indicates he probably didn’t deserve to lead the NFL in sacks, but it was a strong showing as a pass-rusher nonetheless. His career looked to be on an upward trend. The last three seasons haven’t come close to reaching those heights, though. Eighty-eight edge defenders have 500 or more pass-rushing snaps since 2017. Beasley’s pressure rate of 8.9% ranks 75th among that group. That number doesn’t match up with the guy who led the league in sacks four seasons ago.”
The Titans signed Beasley to a one-year, $9.5 million contract during the offseason in the hopes that he could provide a consistent pass-rush opposite Harold Landry, much like Cameron Wake did last season.
However, the Titans might not be done, as the team continues to monitor the situation with Jadeveon Clowney. Signing him would certainly complicate things after inking Beasley, but adding both pass-rushers would give the Titans an embarrassment of riches at the position.
Whether Tennessee signs Clowney or not, the team is going to need Beasley to step up if it hopes to take that improve the pass-rush and make a run at the Super Bowl this coming season.
