Titans’ Taylor Lewan explains why he didn’t play in Week 9

Lewan says his knee is healthy, but sometimes swelling is an issue.

Despite being active in Week 9, Tennessee Titans left tackle Taylor Lewan, who was questionable going into the game with a knee issue, didn’t play a single snap and was replaced by fellow tackle, Bobby Hart.

On Monday, Titans head coach Mike Vrabel noted that Lewan would have been available in an emergency, but didn’t provide any details beyond that.

Before practice on Thursday, Lewan addressed the situation, saying his knee, which underwent surgery to repair a torn ACL during the offseason, began feeling sore after the Week 8 game against the Indianapolis Colts.

Then, things got worse during practice on the Thursday before the game against the Rams.

Lewan did make it clear that his knee is healthy, but it does still get swollen sometimes, which leads to him not having much power in it.

“Sunday on the turf against the Colts, I was pretty sore and then I went out Thursday and I just made it worse,” Lewan revealed. “It was one of those situations where could I go, could I not — I went out to warm up, warmed up and I was just in a situation where I couldn’t really pass that. Didn’t feel a lot of power in my leg and unfortunately couldn’t go.”

Not having Lewan on the field in Week 9 was a major issue for the Titans, as his replacement, Hart, allowed six pressures and two sacks. Thankfully, Tennessee was able to overcome that.

Tennessee will hope to get its starting left tackle back in Week 10 against the Saints. So far, Lewan is off to a good start to the week after logging a limited practice on Wednesday.
