The Tennessee Titans made their third pick of the 2023 NFL draft in the third round when they selected Tulane running back Tyjae Spears at No. 81 overall.

I simply do not understand this pick for several reasons.

The Titans ignore their biggest position of need once again (wide receiver) while adding a player at a position they didn’t need to, assuming Derrick Henry is still in the team’s plans for 2023.

Even if he isn’t, the team drafted a running back in Hassan Haskins in the fourth round of the 2023 NFL draft.

As if all that wasn’t enough, Spears figures to be a complementary back who has a torn ACL in his past, keeping in the spirit of Jon Robinson’s seeming affinity for bringing in players who have suffered the serious injury.

Now, all this negativity is not to downplay Spears’ talent, because he has plenty of that. But when you put it all together, this pick makes no sense for the Titans.

Barring a trade, the Titans are done in what has been an eventful Day 2 of the 2023 NFL draft, with the team having made two very unpopular picks that have left fans scratching their heads.
