Titans’ Ryan Tannehill makes PFF’s list of best available ‘franchise builders’

Ryan Tannehill is one of the best “franchise builders” available in free agency, per PFF.

There’s no telling what the future looks like for quarterback Ryan Tannehill with the Tennessee Titans.

But one thing that is for certain is that he was a key piece of bringing the Tennessee offense to a new level in 2019.

That shone clearly as the team bounced back from a slow 2-4 start to coming up just one game short of an appearance in Super Bowl LIV.

Tannehill played out the best season of his career, leading the league in yards per attempt (9.6), adjusted yards gained per pass attempt (10.2), yards per completion (13.6) and passer rating (117.5).

Pro Football Focus analyst Anthony Treash ranked Tannehill at No. 5 on a list of the top 10 “franchise builders” available in free agency and the 2020 NFL Draft.

That’s directly behind Tampa Bay Buccaneers quarterback Jameis Winston and just ahead of New England Patriots signal-caller Tom Brady.

“We’ve said it before, but I’m going to say it again — PFF has never seen a year-over-year improvement like what Ryan Tannehill did from 2018 to 2019, when he went from producing one of the lowest passing grades we have ever seen in a single season to become the NFL’s highest-graded quarterback,” Treash wrote. “That in itself proved that the soon-to-be 32-year-old can be a viable quarterback with the right team.”

Play-action was one area Tannehill and the Titans particularly excelled in last year, as Treash notes the Titans quarterback posted a play-action passer rating of 140.6, the best in the league.

Whether or not Tannehill takes the field for head coach Mike Vrabel and the Titans in 2020 remains to be seen, but he’ll be an asset for whichever team he lands with if he can keep playing at the same level he did last season.
