Titans listed among ‘teams that should pursue’ Colin Kaepernick

The Titans do have a need at backup quarterback.

With the Tennessee Titans having a need at the backup quarterback spot, there will continue to be talk about them being a good fit for free-agent quarterback, Colin Kaepernick, until he actually signs with a team.

ESPN’s Jeremy Fowler started off the Kaepernick-Titans talked recently when he reported that leagues sources believe Tennessee, along with the Washington Redskins, Jacksonville Jaguars and Los Angeles Chargers, are among the best fits for the former San Francisco 49er.

Now, The Athletic’s Mike Sando has compiled a list of the “best fits” for Kaepernick, and of course the Titans were on it. Tennessee falls into Sando’s “teams that should pursue” category, along with nine others.

“Logan Woodside is backing up Ryan Tannehill. The Titans looked smart last season by signing Tannehill as insurance for Marcus Mariota. Kaepernick could provide insurance for Tannehill, who has not started a full season since 2015 and flourished last season in a run-heavy offense. Kaepernick has also flourished in run-heavy offenses and, like Tannehill, is an athletic player.”

The nine other teams are the Jacksonville Jaguars, Buffalo Bills, Denver Broncos, Carolina Panthers, Cincinnati Bengals, New England Patriots, Washington Redskins, New York Giants and Arizona Cardinals.

Beyond those squads, Sando lists “teams that should consider Kaepernick”, made up of the Seattle Seahawks, Atlanta Falcons, Houston Texans, Minnesota Vikings, Kansas City Chiefs, Tampa Bay Buccaneers, Los Angeles Rams, Detroit Lions, Pittsburgh Steelers and Chicago Bears.

The fit with the Titans and Kaepernick makes sense. After all, the Titans’ backup quarterback situation is a huge question mark, as both Logan Woodside and Cole McDonald have never taken a regular season snap.

Adding to that, Kaepernick’s skill set mirrors that of starting quarterback Ryan Tannehill’s, so the Titans would be able to continue running their offense almost seamlessly if Tannehill were to get hurt.

Another step in Kaepernick possibly returning to the league came on Monday when NFL Commissioner Roger Goodell said he would like to see a team sign the quarterback.

It still isn’t known what Kaepernick’s level of interest is, though, and what role he’d be willing to accept. If he did sign with the Titans, he’d be a clear backup who wouldn’t play unless there’s an injury to Tannehill.
