Tired: Caleb Williams crying after a painful loss; Wired: coming back and bringing it vs Oregon

This is a test for Caleb Williams.

When Caleb Williams cried after USC’s loss to Washington, everyone in the United States had an opinion on that striking viral moment. Talking heads from coast to coast weighed in on whether it was a good look for Caleb and his NFL draft stock.

The critics who savaged Caleb for what he did seem to forget that sports are an emotional activity performed by emotional beings. Athletes are not robots or cogs in a machine. They’re real flesh and blood beings who exult in triumph and feel pain in defeat. If people want to make this into a larger issue, they can try, but sports are all about passion. Caring. Having that fire in the belly, the will to win.

Some commentators might still be concerned about Caleb Williams last week against Washington. A better point of focus for football pundits and talk-show hosts will be this Saturday’s game against Oregon. Will Caleb, after that emotional game against Washington, be able to come back against Oregon and play extremely well, or will the emotional fuel tank run on empty? That’s a much better question than anything related to the Washington game.
