Playing quarterback in the NFL didn’t work out. Neither did a stint in Minor League Baseball. Perhaps a return to football — at a new position — will prolong Tim Tebow’s time as a professional athlete.
The ex-Jet, now 33, recently worked out for the Jaguars as a tight end, according to multiple reports. NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport said Jacksonville has discussed signing Tebow, but no decision has been made.
The Broncos made Tebow the 25th overall pick in 2010, but he struggled to transition to the NFL after becoming a star at Florida. The mobile QB showed little as a passer at the next level. He won a playoff game for Denver in 2011 but was quickly traded to New York, where he was hardly used. Tebow appeared in just 73 offensive snaps in 2012. That was the last year he appeared in an NFL game.
Tebow has since spent time with the Patriots and Eagles and as a broadcaster and Mets minor league outfielder. He announced his retirement from pro baseball in February after four minor league seasons. He played at Triple-A in his final season, 2019.
The idea of Tebow switching positions on the gridiron is hardly a new one, but him embracing the idea is. There was talk of Tebow switching spots before he was even drafted, but he was never willing to.
“For me it’s always about pursuing what’s in your heart, what you love, what you’re passionate about, and I love the game of football but what I really love doing is playing the quarterback position,” Tebow told the Dan Patrick Show in 2016.
“I’ve had a lot of good opportunities to play another position but that just wasn’t in my heart. It wasn’t something I wanted to do. If I was going to make a change I’d rather make a change to baseball.”
