Tiger Woods kept himself around the top of the leaderboard over the course of an eventful first round at Winged Foot Golf Club on Thursday at the U.S. Open, but a blunder on the final hole did some serious damage to his scorecard.
On a day when playing partner Justin Thomas posted an incredible score of 5-under par, Woods made five birdies on his round, including three in a row starting with the par-5 9th. Woods’ inaccuracy off the tee cost him, though, and the diabolical rough at Winged Foot contributed to six bogeys.
Woods came to the 18th tee at 1-over par – which would have been a decent opening-round score – but had to settle for a 3-over 73 after carding a disastrous double bogey at the last.
Needing to get up and down for par with a wedge in his hand from the edge of the fairway, Woods chunked a pitch shot that barely made it to the base of the hill he was trying to hit over. After rolling back down toward him, his third shot traveled just nine yards.

Woods then pitched onto the green, and two-putted for double.
The scores should come back down closer to par as the week progresses, so Woods certainly isn’t out of contention – especially if he keeps making putts like he did on the 16th.
