The NFL approved an interesting wrinkle to the 2023 schedule during the Monday session of the Spring owner’s meetings. Games can now be flexed into Thursday Night Football late in the season.
There are some fine details in the flexing rules, and those rules effectively rule out the Lions from having to worry about it.
Games can only get flexed to Thursday between Weeks 13 and 17. There are only two flexes allowed in total, and the NFL requires a 28-day notice for the teams involved in the flexing.
There is a two-game limit for each team to appear on Thursday nights, and the Lions are slated to play on TNF in Week 1 in Kansas City and Week 4 in Green Bay. That doesn’t count the team’s Thanksgiving day game in Week 11.

The Lions will hit their two-game limit before the TNF flex window begins in Week 13, which means Detroit won’t have to worry about any chances of games being moved to Thursday nights late in the season.
